There are 26 lighthouses off the coast of Maryland. People come from all over the world to see them. Here are the details about the lighthouses near Glenn Forest that are closest to our Lexington Park apartments.
Cove Point Lighthouse
One of the coolest features of Cove Point Lighthouse is the restored keeper’s home which can be rented. Up to 16 guests can stay, but there are two different sides, and you can rent just one or both. (FYI, the website says it’s fully booked through the end of 2021.) Even if you can’t spend the night, you can still visit the lighthouse on Wednesdays and Sundays from noon until 4 through September 29.
While you’re in the area, spend a few hours at Calvert Cliffs State Park. You can hunt for fossils, hike, go fishing, and swim at the sandy beach. There is a $5 per car fee; only cash is accepted. You should also stop by Cove Point Winery which has tastings from 11:30 am until 5:30 pm Wednesday through Sunday.
Drum Point Lighthouse
You can see the Drum Point Lighthouse when you visit the Calvert Marine Museum. Tours that take you inside the lighthouse may not be available, but you can still take beautiful pictures of the outside. You can also take a cool virtual tour of the lighthouse. There are some neat exhibits in the museum, as well as a marsh you can walk around. Admission to the museum is $9 and there are discounts for military, AAA members, and Senior citizens.
If you need a bite to eat, stop by The CD Cafe. They serve burgers, pasta, and seafood. There is also a lounge where you can enjoy cocktails.
Piney Point Lighthouse
Although it’s only 35 feet tall, Piney Point Lighthouse used to have a big job guiding members of the high society to this area from DC for vacation. Your $7 admission actually includes climbing the lighthouse. You can also explore the maritime exhibits, museum, and keeper’s quarters. There’s a nice pier and a picnic area, so pack a lunch. If you have access to a kayak, there is also a place to launch. The area is currently open from 10 am until 5 pm. Check the website for winter hours starting in November.
In the future, you will also be able to see the Point Lookout Lighthouse. It is only 30 minutes from Glenn Forest, but it’s currently closed for renovations. If you are in the area, you will have plenty of time to check it off your list.
